Let me first say that what people call âwhite privilegeâ is an inheritance that gives people of European descent certain material advantages at the cost of a direct compromise to the way of Jesus.
I believe that for white people, it is much less threatening when they perceive white privilege not as something they sought out and chose (something a âbad personâ would do), but something they didnât know was inherited whether wanted or notâwhich is exactly why it is bondage. The Holy Spiritâs way is to convince them of this truth through revelation or epiphany, but a willing and soft heart is required for this to happen.
Everything after this realization is in their hearts and Godâs hands. As Eric Johnson, my friend and brother in the Lord, says, âI think that on average, white people are ignorant, not racist. That said, when you educate an ignorant person and they continue to choose their ignorance, that is racist because they just moved from making an unconscious choice to a conscious one. If they keep it [the perceived privilege], that is a choice. Will they choose to stay comfortable or follow the way of Jesus?â
With that said, white privilege is not a cultural knapsack of free passes, but an invisible noose of self-deception. It is something that makes its possessors feel comfortable while it slowly constricts their cultural oxygen, making it impossible for them to think fairly and to make equitable decisions toward other peopleâespecially people of color. White privilege even makes people think what they have is simply because of their hard work, intellect, or virtue, or because âwe know best.â The foundation on which white privilege is built is the notion that its possessors owe an answer to nobody. All of the above is the great deception of, and will prove to be the death of, white privilege. It is, in fact, not a privilege at all but is actually what I believe should be more accurately termed white deception.
To the white Christian community: Anything that teaches reliance on self instead of on God is sin. Relying on yourself and on the privilege you erroneously believe you were born with makes you an idol to yourself, and idolatry always leads to bondage and captivity. Operating in this manner teaches arrogance, hubris, and inordinate pride, and pride always comes before a fall. Pride, no matter where it is found, is like an invisible noose. It strangles, suffocates, and destroys, and it does so while giving the illusion of freedom. God does not want this kind of life for you.
There are only two sides to this coin. A harvest depends on the seeds planted and even more so on the soil in which it is planted. In this example of white privilege, just as in the parable of the sower that Jesus offered, the soil is representative of the heart (see Mark 4:1â20). Either one is planting seeds depending on the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, or one is planting seeds trusting in the law of sin and death.
